Amidst international terrorism, health issues (Bird Flu), elections and political uncertainties continuing to impact negatively on the economic activities, the region looks up to the future with India, China and Australia performing well economically. To a large extent, these forces are beyond the influence of individual nations and organizations. Sensitivity to the environment, continuous adaptation and flexibility are critical to survival for many firms and nations. It is against this backdrop that APFHRM pursues its mandate of elevating and promoting Human Resource Management in this part of the world.

Our October 2003 meeting in the Philippines was highlighted by the changing of the guards for APFHRM. After a quick turnover of functions discussion, the new set of Council Officers wasted no time in planning for the two-year term. After taking care of some routine business matters, a brainstorming session was undertaken. A long list of projects for the two-year period indicating timeframes and lead countries was the output of this productive exchange of ideas. This outcome is a mere reflection of the collective passion of the officers and delegates to bring APFHRM to a new and higher level of performance.

APFHRM Meeting in Colombo along with the IPM Sri Lanka National Conference- 18& 19th May 2004

Our first meeting for this year will be held on 18th May in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was agreed that in order to maximize the visit of Council Officers and delegates, 19th May will be used for a knowledge-sharing session where each country is requested to make a 20 minute presentation of HR issues in their respective countries and what their Institute is doing by way of programmes and projects they have undertaken. This is then followed by a 10 minute question and answer session. It is envisaged that this sharing of experiences portion will enrich officers and delegates. We hope this additional feature will attract more countries to attend our meetings.

In our forthcoming meeting, aside from hearing progress reports on projects, we will take up the subject of how to promote the August World Congress. It is our desire to send a strong delegation considering that we will play host to the 2006 World Congress to be held in Singapore. Our plan to hold our own regional conference in India next year will also be a good avenue for us to organize ourselves better for the 2006 World Congress.

We are confident we can achieve what we have set out to do during our term. Achieving our goals will only mean that APFHRM would have become a strong force in uplifting Human Resource Management in the region.

APFHRM survey conducted by AHRI on performance management
The above mentioned survey by AHRI along with Curtin University is ongoing and AHRI expects to present the findings at an appropriate international forum.

India – Sri Lanka HR Professional Exchange programme
To share knowledge and best practices and build relationships NIPM India and IPM Sri Lanka started an exchange programme. The first phase was a visit to India by a delegation of six HR professionals, from Sri Lanka who visited leading organizations in three chapters (Chennai, Bhuneshwar and Calcutta). The return delegation from India is to visit Sri Lanka in May /June 2004.

National conferences
Hong Kong- November 2003 and India- Feb 2004 held their National Conferences and Australia and Sri Lanka will hold their National Conferences in May 2004. Due to the understanding made at the APFHRM forums there is increased cross invitations by countries to participate at their conferences.

With some activities happening and others yet to happen APFHRM is confident of having a lively period with growing international activities for the HR professionals in the region.
